How to Plan a Short Getaway from Singapore for Your Family

Updated September 2026|Family|By Telunas Resorts

Planning a short getaway from Singapore for your family comes down to three decisions: which resort, which room, and which dates. For most families with young children, that means the Overwater Room at Telunas Beach Resort, a bed for parents plus a children's bunk bed a few steps from the water. For a quieter and more private stay, it means an Overwater Villa at Telunas Private Island with its own children's loft. Both are reached the same way: a Sindo Ferry crossing to Batam, a short team-guided transfer, and a boat into the Riau Archipelago, roughly 2.5 hours door to door.

  • Resort: Beach Resort for value and a casual pace, Private Island for privacy and structured kids' programming.
  • Room: an Overwater Room or Bungalow at Beach Resort, or an Overwater Villa with a children's loft at Private Island.
  • Dates: the year-end school holiday (21 Nov to 31 Dec 2026) or the Deepavali long weekend (9 Nov 2026).

This guide walks through the resort choice, the room layouts, what is actually included, and the two Singapore calendar windows worth building a trip around before the year is out.

Choose Your Resort: Private Island or Beach Resort for Families

Both resorts run the same journey and the same roster-based activity model. The real difference is privacy, room layout and price, not distance or travel time.

Telunas Private Island

The quieter, more private option. Overwater Villas come with a private balcony and a separate children's loft, meals are a three-course sit-down at the Grand Lodge included with every stay, and the Kampung Kids Club runs daily for ages 5 to 10. Reserve Overwater Villas →

Telunas Beach Resort

The more casual, lower-priced option. Overwater Bungalows sit over the water on a private beach, dining is family-style buffet with kid-friendly options and an all-day canteen for snacks, and the largest room, an Overwater 3-Bedroom Bungalow with Loft, suits bigger family groups. The Journey from Singapore: What 2.5 Hours Actually Looks Like

  1. Ferry to Batam, about 60 minutes: Book the 10:00am Sindo Ferry from Harbourfront Centre Ferry Terminal to Sekupang Ferry Terminal. Most guests arrive at Sekupang around 10:00 to 10:10am Batam time.
  2. Complete the arrival card before you travel: every traveller to Indonesia, children included, must submit an arrival declaration in the All Indonesia app, from up to 72 hours before arrival. This is a requirement of Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration, not a Telunas policy, so do it before you leave home rather than at the terminal.
  3. Terminal transfer, about 25 minutes: Telunas staff, wearing blue polo shirts, meet you at Sekupang and guide your family from international arrivals to domestic departures, a short 5-minute walk plus about 20 minutes of domestic terminal transit, then travel with you on the onward ferry.
  4. Boat to Telunas, about 60 minutes: the scenic ride from Sekupang to Telunas runs through the Riau Archipelago. Lunch is served on arrival, with check-in at 2:00pm.

Total time from Harbourfront to Telunas, including the terminal transfer, is approximately 2.5 hours. See the full travel information page for the complete step-by-step breakdown.

Family Rooms at Each Resort

The two entry Beach Resort room tiers share the same family layout, a bed for parents plus a bunk bed for kids, at different sizes and price points. The largest Beach Resort option spreads across three bedrooms plus a loft instead. Private Island's Overwater Villa pairs a king bed with a separate children's loft.

What's Included, and What Costs Extra

Both resorts run a rotating roster of scheduled activities, and your host shares the week's schedule with you on arrival. Activities requested outside that roster can carry additional charges.

  • On the roster, included: at Beach Resort, sea kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, beach games, a seasonal jungle waterfall hike, mangrove planting, and a kid-height low ropes course. At Private Island, sea kayaking, the freshwater infinity pool, a nature walk, deck jumping, mangrove planting, and an evening bonfire, plus the daily Kampung Kids Club for ages 5 to 10.
  • Extra charge, book ahead: at both resorts, an overwater or beachside massage, the fishing boat adventure, and a handful of dining experiences including the Candlelight Dinner and the Klepon Cooking Class, which Telunas asks you to book 2 to 3 days before arrival.

When to Go: Any Weekend Works, and Two Windows Line Up Especially Well

Telunas runs year round and the route and timing do not change month to month, so any weekend works. Two Singapore calendar windows simply line up more easily than the rest, because they give most families a long weekend without taking leave. The Ministry of Education has confirmed the 2026 year-end school holiday runs from Saturday 21 November to Thursday 31 December. Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, with the Ministry of Manpower listing Monday 9 November as the observed public holiday, making it a long weekend for most working parents.

Our own recommendation, not a site policy: plan for two to three nights, since the journey itself runs about 2.5 hours each way. Most family bookings at Telunas come together roughly five to six weeks before arrival, so mid to late September is a reasonable time to lock dates for the year-end break. For a full sample schedule, see our 3-day school holiday itinerary, and our wider guide to the best resort near Batam for families.

Entry Requirements: Visa and the Arrival Card

Singapore citizens, including children, get a free 30-day visa on arrival in Batam. Singapore permanent residents travelling on an NRIC can enter without a visa for stays of up to 4 days. Travellers who need a Visa on Arrival should keep at least 6 months of passport validity, per Telunas's own pre-arrival information page. Every traveller, regardless of visa type, must complete the All Indonesia arrival card before landing, a requirement set by Indonesia's Directorate General of Immigration, not by Telunas.

Still deciding between the two resorts, or have a question about your dates? Get in touch with the Telunas team and we will help you match the room and dates to your family.

It depends on how much travel time you want to spend versus time at the destination. Telunas is built specifically around family stays reached from Singapore: kid-friendly room layouts, activities included in the room rate, and a team that manages the ferry-to-boat journey door to door in roughly 2.5 hours. If you want a shorter overall trip with the resort doing the logistics, that combination is the main reason families choose it over a longer, self-planned itinerary.
Both islands sit within a similar distance of Singapore and both have family resorts. This guide only speaks to what we know first-hand, which is Telunas's own family fit near Batam: two properties, kid-specific room layouts, and a managed journey. We are not in a position to make a fair claim about resorts on Bintan we have not evaluated.
We can only speak for Telunas. Telunas Beach Resort suits families who want a casual, lower-priced stay with room to spread out, including a 3-Bedroom Bungalow with Loft for bigger groups. Telunas Private Island suits families who want more privacy and structured kids' programming: it runs the daily Kampung Kids Club for ages 5 to 10, which Beach Resort does not have.
Our own recommendation, not a site policy: two to three nights. The journey itself runs about 2.5 hours each way via Batam, so a single overnight leaves little time at the resort, while three nights covers a full rhythm of activity days without spending too much of a short trip on transit.
Singapore citizens, including children, get a free 30-day visa on arrival in Batam. Singapore permanent residents travelling on an NRIC can enter without a visa for stays of up to 4 days. Every traveller, regardless of visa type, must also complete Indonesia's All Indonesia arrival card before landing. See the current fees and full requirements on our pre-arrival information page.
Telunas hosts a mix of individual family stays alongside scheduled group and school bookings across the year. If a quiet, just-our-family week matters to you, ask your booking contact about the week's group schedule before you confirm dates.
Scheduled activities on each resort's rotating roster are included, and your host shares the week's schedule on arrival. A handful of extras cost more and need advance booking: massage, the fishing boat adventure, and dining experiences such as the Candlelight Dinner and the Klepon Cooking Class.

A short getaway from Singapore for your family does not need complicated planning. Pick Beach Resort for value and a laid-back pace, or Private Island for a quieter, more private stay with structured kids' programming, choose the room that fits your children's ages, and build the trip around the year-end break or the Deepavali long weekend.
